The Cadbury Flake, a British chocolate bar known for its unique, crumbly texture, was first developed in 1920 at Cadbury’s factory in Bournville, England. Its creation was accidental, discovered by an employee named Ralph Thompson, who noticed thin streams of excess chocolate spilling from moulds, cooling into flaky ripples. This led to the development of the Flake, initially marketed for its delicate, layered milk chocolate structure. By 1930, Cadbury began selling half-length Flakes specifically for garnishing soft serve ice cream, famously known as the “99 Flake” in the UK.
The Cadbury Flake Dipped, a variant of the original, was introduced in 2003 as “Flake Dipped” (also known as Flake Luxury). This version features the classic crumbly Flake coated in an additional layer of Cadbury milk chocolate, offering a contrast between the flaky interior and a smoother, creamier exterior. It resembles a larger version of the Cadbury Twirl, which also consists of Flake-style bars covered in milk chocolate. The Dipped Flake enhances the indulgent experience with its combination of textures and rich chocolate flavor.
The exact process for creating the Flake’s unique texture remains a closely guarded secret, with no other manufacturer able to replicate it. The Dipped Flake is produced using Cadbury’s signature milk chocolate, made from ingredients including milk, sugar, cocoa mass, cocoa butter, whey powder, vegetable fats (palm, shea), and emulsifiers (E442, E476). It is manufactured in various countries, including the UK and Egypt, and is popular in markets like the UK, Ireland, Australia, South Africa, and the UAE.
