Fry’s Turkish Delight is a chocolate bar created by J.S. Fry & Sons, a British chocolate manufacturer based in Bristol. Launched in 1914, it consists of a rose-flavored Turkish delight (lokum) center enrobed in milk chocolate. The concept was inspired by traditional Turkish lokum, a gel-based confection from the Ottoman Empire, often flavored with rosewater, lemon, or other essences and dusted with powdered sugar or coconut. J.S. Fry & Sons adapted this by coating it with chocolate, blending Eastern and Western confectionery styles.
The Fry family began making chocolate in 1759, initially for medicinal purposes, as was common at the time. By the late 1700s, “Eastern” candies like Turkish delight gained popularity in the UK through trade, and Fry & Sons capitalized on this trend. The company merged with Cadbury in 1919, but the Fry’s brand name was retained for this product. Its iconic purple wrapper and “Full of Eastern Promise” slogan, used since the 1960s, evoke an exotic image, though the chocolate is distinct from traditional lokum due to its mass-produced nature and added preservatives. Since 2010, UK-market Fry’s Turkish Delight has been produced in Poland.
